The Power Of Sugar

This week, I have read David Gillespie’s The Sweet Poison Quit Plan and discovering the impact of sugar on the body. Research has shown that sugar, or more importantly the fructose in sugar effects us because it’s:

  1. Converted to fat by our liver
  2. Interferes with our appetite control hormones

I like everyone else thought my diet was reasonably balanced however what I didn’t realise is how much hidden sugar is in the healthy everyday foods we eat. So as a challenge, between now and the end of the year I  plan to watch my daily intake of  sugar attempting to keep it down to the recommended 6 teaspoons a day for women. This is actually 24 grams of sugar as 1 teaspoon of sugar equals 4 grams of sugar. It won’t be easy but I think the improved health of my body will make it worth it. L – Lamingtons

Lamington’s are an Australian icon. They are believed to have first been created, by accident in the kitchen of Queensland Government House by Lord Lamington’s maid servant. She had accidentally dropped the sponge cake into melted chocolate and because he hated waste it is reported that Lord Lamington told her to cover it in coconut so his guests could still eat it without making a mess. Everyone loved the creation except possibly Lord Lamington himself who once described them as “those bloody poofy woolly biscuits.”

Lord Lamington was Governor of Queensland from 9th April, 1896 until 19th December, 1901. On 19th December, 2001 the Australian lamington celebrated its 100th birthday.

LAMINGTON RECIPE

125g butter

125g sugar

1/4 teaspoon vanilla essence

250g self-raising flour

pinch salt

1/2 cup milk

Beat butter and sugar until creamy. Add vanilla. Add eggs 1 at a time and beat well. Sift flour and salt together. Add flour alternatively with milk to the mixture. Turn into a greased and floured lamington tin (square baking tin.) Bake in a moderate oven (180-200C) for 30 minutes. Allow to cool. Cut cake into squares.

Icing:

Sift icing sugar into a bowl. Blend in cocoa with a little boiling water, add a few drops of vanilla essence. Add butter, mix well, adding a little more boiling water if necessary, until icing is smooth. Dip each cake into icing and roll in coconut. Set aside until firm.

Addit: Flo’s husband Joh Bjelke-Petersen was the longest-serving Premier of Queensland from 8th August, 1968 until 1st December, 1987.


Share Your World – 2016 Week #14

If you could hire someone to help you, would it be with cleaning, cooking, or yard work?

I have 3 cleaners in my real world and I would never go back to life without them. They came today and my house looks and smells beautifully clean. Given the opportunity I would also love to employ a cook as I usually spend part of the weekend preparing meals for the week ahead as I get home to late to be bothered. In reality, I don’t think I want anyone to help with the yard work as it’s my husband’s job and it keeps him busy for hours. If someone did it for him, he would be inside the house, making noise and distracting me from my writing.

What makes you laugh the most?

Laughter in our house is a common occurrence. Some examples of where it comes from include:

  • Evening meals in our family are very funny especially if we have guests. I don’t know why but our conversations make everyone laugh and are memorable.
  • Playing board games, Wii games or anything interactive.
  • I also find Table Topics  — impromptu speaking for 1 minute — brings out the laughter in me.

What was your favorite food when you were a child?

I don’t know that I had a favourite food although when I could choose what I wanted to eat for my birthday I always chose prawn cutlets. I still love them however the size of the cutlets have shrunk over the years.

List at least five favorite flowers or plants.

Roses are my absolute favourite.

I also enjoy daffodils and the smell of jonquils. My favourite Australian plants are kangaroo paw and wattle.

Last week I was grateful to spend Saturday night enjoying the company of our special friends of many years and Sunday visiting with all sets of mine and my husbands parents. This week I am looking forward to some quiet time and to getting more organised and catching up on the Blogging from A -Z 2016 challenge.

Share Your World 2016 – Week #8

What household chore do you absolutely hate doing?

I hate doing all house hold chores which is why I pay a cleaner. They enjoy it, are definitely better at it and the stress is removed. I love to come home the day the cleaners have been and just sit quietly and smell the clean silence. It rejuvenates me to think about the blogging and editing I can do at the weekend.

What was the last URL that you bookmarked?

I don’t know what this question means so I guess I don’t do it. I am really only an amateur when it comes to this technology.

Close your eyes. Listen to your body. What part of your body is seeking attention? What is it telling you?

When I closed my eyes I did so at my computer desk and put my head in my hands. At this time my body began to tingle and my head began to slightly ache. I think it was telling me thanks for stopping and are you going to feed me soon as my blood sugar levels are dropping after a long day computing and working. Message correct. I felt better after food.

Would you rather have a two-bedroom apartment in a big city of your choosing or a mansion in the country side in the state or country where you currently live?

If I could afford to not work I would rather be in country New South Wales. If I had to work I would rather be in apartment in the city close to work. I of course would be happy to give working in Canada, London or USA a go if I met the qualifications.

Last week I was grateful for the support I received during a tough week. This week I am looking forward to putting all the little illustrations back into my book before I review it with my collaborator. Editing is such a long process.

Share Your World – 2015 Week 41

What genre of music do you like?

I like multiple genres of music. The determining factor for me is that the music must have meaningful words. I don’t like music styles without words such as classical, nor do I like heavy metal or songs that repeat the same words over again.  The more meaning and motivation behind the song the better. One of my favourite songs, Helen Reddy’s I Am Woman has motivated me over many decades.

What is the worst thing you ate this last week?

I rarely eat takeaway food however last Friday my husband and I shared some fresh, yummy, crispy hand battered potato scallops. Many years ago good potato scallops were everywhere however these days prepackaged frozen ones have taken over and in my opinion they are not worth eating.

Would you like to be famous?  In what way?

I don’t wish to be famous in a way that my life is directed by others. However as a writer, when I publish my book next year I would like to be well known and respected for my expertise and if this leads to fame I will enjoy the journey.

Last week I was grateful to perform well enough at my Area Table topics competition for Toastmasters to come 3rd. In the coming week I am looking forward to having some me time as life has been very busy lately.
